Hi,

I picked up a used engine and installed it. Its a 1988 Johnson 3cyl inline 60HP. Runs good and strong but the idle is very low and stalls a lot, even when warm. I want to increase the idle speed. Do I turn the large plastic thumb wheel or do I turn the screw on the throttle arm? I don't want to mess up the base timing.

Thanks!

The screw on the vertical throttle arm is the mechanical idle stop set screw.

Adjust the "plastic thumb wheel" (trunion) on the throttle cable to get the idle where you want it, then adjust the above idle stop screw in so that the idle cannot drop any lower than where you have adjusted it.

You may need to readjust the trunion again should the idle drift somewhat higher when on the water when you retard from a higher rpm to the idle setting.
