I am new to boating. I have purchased a 1987 Smokercraft with a 60 horse Mecury engine. Everything is running great, except that the engine is idleing a little slow. How do I bump up the idle speed? Currently to keep it running I have to throttle it. Any assistance that you can give me would be highly appreciated.

Re: Idle Speed

When you say it's idling slow, what does that mean? Do you have a tachometer?

Does it idle roughly? It could be a dirty carb or something else.

Is the fuel fresh?

You've come to the right place, give us as much information as possible and you should receive a good bit of direction.

It's a really good idea to have a manual for your outboard; once you get the feel for how it works, it will give you much more confidence in your rig while you're out on the water.

Re: Idle Speed

To bump the idle up on thoes if u are standing behind the motor on the left side there should be a screw with a spring on it that will increase your idle speed buy advanceing your timeing slightly.

Re: Idle Speed

you can also adjust the throttle stop screw. without messing up the timing, advancing too much can cause other problems at wot. have someone move the throttle lever, what where the link stops, should be a bolt there that can be adjusted. Studly is correct about the manual.

Re: Idle Speed

Thanks for your help. I bumped up the throttle slightly. It is now perfect. I will probably order a manuel for future problems.

A manual is good to have for routine maintainence as well as when problems arise.
