Good day to All,
I have recently purchased a Bass Boat with a 1995 150 hp Black Max carbureted engine. So far all is running smooth and I'd like to keep it that way. I've been reading allot of post here regarding the problems that the Idle Stabilizer Module can cause. My question is does my 1995 have this module and if so roughly where on the engine it is located. If I have it I understand that I can run without it so I would remove it ahead of any failure.

Thanks & Happy Holidays

If tha motor is "happy" and you are not havin' any problems I would just leave it alone. There are thousands of motors out there with 'em still there. Now if ya start havin' electric and/or timin' problems thats a different story. If you can do tha timing adjustments yourself you can remove it at any time. If not you will need ta take it in or find someone that can do it when ya take it off. In other words, "if it ain't broke no need ta beat on it". JMO.........D

Thanks Dukedog,

I'm not one to look for extra work or as you put it fix what aint broke!! There are more than a hand full of posts here if you use Idle Stabilizer in a search that will tell you that if the module shorts this way or that the results can be catostrophic. I'm really looking for someone that can tell me if my engine is configured with the module and where I'd find it on the block?

Re: Idle Stabilizer Module

Its gonna be on tha port side of tha motor, attached with three 10/32 screws, between tha throttle/timing avance arm and tha head. It will have a red with white stripe, a white with black stripe and a black ground wire coming out of it. Tha stripped wires will go to a switch box on tha other side of tha motor. Ta take it off just disconnect tha wires at tha switch box and tha ground and chunck it. But if you pull it off you have to be able to redo tha timing sequnce. This part seems ta get a bad rap for some reason. It will fail just like any other part on that motor. Its kinda like "get rid of steel reeds cause one MIGHT break and cause major damage" I've seen one steel reed break in over 30 plus years jackin' with V6 Mercs. Seems like "Ole wives tales" ain't just restricted to tha kitchen. Tha trick is being able ta do tha timing yourself or pay ta have it done. Good luck whatever way ya go...........D

Just a note. Ya still got tha oil injection workin'? If so I'd be more concerned 'bout it cause of its age............

Re: Idle Stabilizer Module

Thanks Dukedog,

I see it now that you've described it and it's location. I believe that you know these engines and I'm going to take your advice and that of a local friend who is a Merc. Tech and leave it on. I believe I could do the Timing if need be and have the equipment if it ever comes down to it.n The Oil Inject on this engine has already been removed and I'm mixing. The boat and the engine both appear to be very low hour for the year and the previous owner seemed to be one that takes care of his toys. Any specific items that you know of on these that are high failure and good to keep as ready spares?

Re: Idle Stabilizer Module

Best thing is ta stay on top of maintance. Fresh gas (in tha States), filters, all fuel lines including bleed lines, fittings and etc. Might throw some StaBil and Quickleen in tha tank. It helps.

Keep a close eye on regulators. Those seem ta be a weak point. Look at tha yellow and tha red lead bullet connectors for any discoloration. If those are not good and tight it will cause a heat build up at tha connectors puttin' stress on tha regulators. Tha rest is just a crap shoot on what will/will not fail. Ya just never know. It may never have a problem. Complete water pump kit, gearcase oil once a year. Some may think thats to often but is a coupla thousand if either pops. Check compression a coupla times a year to unless tha motor gives ya reason ta do it more. Good solid motors if ya just take care of 'em..............D

Re: Idle Stabilizer Module

Thanks Dukedog,

Sounds like a good maint plan to me. I already got a line on spare regulators to keep in the box and will check those leads for color and tork. I've been using the STABIL already but, haven't heard of Quickleen? I've been a fan of Sea Foam with all engines I've owned and I have some Merc. Power Tune left from my last Merc. 90hp 3cyl Inline. The boat didn't have a Fuel water Seperator so I installed one. Used new fuel line when I did it so, good to go there. I still need to do inline filter, etc... apprciate the tips and the chat!!
