Idle stabilizer. Remove or not?

2.5 liter 225offshore, carburated.
Engine starts right up, warm or cold.
Runs strong through all RPM ranges. WOT at 5400 RPM.
BUT!! Idle is rough! Dead slow is not to bad, but if I try and run around 1000
RPM the engine seems to be real lopey?
Idle in gear is around 700 RPM, like I said. Not to bad there , but just a little throttle and it really starts to surge.
I have gone through the carbs, top to bottom.
Tried adjusting idle mixture till I'm crazy!
Someone recomended removing the idle stabilizer box.
Any opinions on that???
Thanks.
Rick.

Re: Idle stabilizer. Remove or not?

If you put a dc voltmeter on the bias terminals (the terminals that are wired together between the switchbox's) and watch it at idle, as idle goes below 700 rpm, the voltage will go down, advancing the timing and slightly speeding up the idle. It helps to keep the animal running when it's trying to be cold and die right after startup. In a healthy engine it has no other function.

It sounds like a tune problem to me, maybe need a bit more fuel at idle. Maybe change the throttle pickup timing a bit.

BTW, smaller idle jets = more fuel. The idle jet meters air, not fuel.

If it's WH carbs (no pump) larger vent jets might also help.

hope it helps
John
