Just put the boat in the water and had an issue that carried over from last season. At idle speed the motor stalls (sometimes). Idle is set at 650 rpms. In the offseason I cleaned the carbs and replaced the primer bulbs and fuel lines. Should I increase the idle speed and if so how hard is this to do?

Just wanted to see if there were any thoughts on a solution 'cause now I am at a loss. I ran it again today and in gear it was running near idle no problem, but neutral idle it stalls. I can get it in gear before it stalls and at speed it was great. In gear idle was seemed low less than 500 rpm. Neutral idle before it dies like 650 rpm. I did look at the shift interrupt switch and it is open in fact I played with the shift position and it always seemed open no matter where the lever was. But I guess I can get it in gear no problem so maybe that's not it. Having to dock on one again was no fun. Oh and now both motors temp gauge have decided to fail; the starboard one (same one with the idle problem is intermittant) the port one is dead (it was fine last week).

idle should be set in the water with the motor in gear, get it as low as you can without it stalling, 650 is ok in gear, you have an idle speed stop screw.

Thanks for the reply. So it looks like in gear I am less than 500 so I can bump that up but in gear it doesn't stall only in neutral.

Update: thanks TD!!!!! I found and adjusted the screw. Its retaining nut was loose and the screw was way in. Basically I had someone work on the boat beginning of last season. They were suppose to do a link and sink. I guess they left the nut loose and it must have allowed the screw to move. The clue was the port motor's screw was still factory set indicated by the adhesive stripe. The screw was literally an inch further out than the starboard. I adjusted till it would not stall in neutral and it ended up being close the length of the port one (I have not run it off the dock yet). If this is too high an rpm what could happen? I guess if it is too high lowering it will still cause the neutral stall so if it isn't too bad I will have to live with it?

i think you found your problem. several years ago, i miss tightening that lock nut on my motor, i had the opposite effect. came in to dock, the screw had vibrated in, i had to forceably, shift into neutral, and the motor reved at 2500 rpms.
