Ok so I have a 1983 v8 Mercruiser 898. Boat runs awesome but quits running if left in idle for more than 7 or 8 seconds. Is there anyway to adjust the idle? If so how. That carb is looking rough can I use any carb cleaner to spray on that to clean it.

BTW I love these forums. Everyone has really been helpfull. Purchased so products from the store also. Got the everything right on time.

Re: Idle

Spray it with whatecer you want, it'll LOOK better, but it won't RUN any better.

Idle mixture and choke are both adjustable - what carb do you have?
Is there any fual in the sight tube from the fuel pump?

I recommend adjusting idle mixture and idle rpm per the service manual (find links in Adults Only sticky), and see if that helps. Carb cleaner will just clean the surfaces, and not the passages. If the adjustment doesn't help, next step should be a carb tear-down, cleaning, new kit, and adjustment.
