I have a 2002 Mercury 125HP SaltWater 4 cylinder 2 stoke outboard ... Does anyone out there know what this engine should idle at when it's idiling in neutral with the muffs on ?? The mannul states that when the engine under load or in the water should idle at 650-700 rpm's in foward gear ...
Thanks

Re: Idling Help

Hello,

After adjusting the idle as follows below I believe with muffs idle was around 750-800...

My Friends 2002 Bayliner Capri has a 125 Merc outboard. I believe that he had his idle set about the same way for a while. Problem is when you are in "neutral" it seemed like it was revving a little high.

What I ended up doing (not sure if this is the correct method) was setting the idle in neutral to where it sounded about right, I would then drop it into forward drive (idle). At first it would idle real low, almost stalling. After a couple back and forth adjustments between idle drive and neutral I finally found the correct balance. It now idles at a purr and also when you shift it into drive does not seem like it is going to die.

You are probably familiar with your motor but on his 125 merc idle adjustment screw was on the port side of the motor, on the throttle linkage. Should be clearly marked.

Hope this helps

Re: Idling Help

hey, hey, there. E R here, the four cylinder motors are very sensitive, due to the fact that they run on two cylinders at idle and four cylinders at wide open. Running motor on motor flush (on land) will very much differ at idle versus running motor in water. They rely on exhaust back pressure for proper idling characteristics.
