HELP! I just bought a 14ft Bayliner Capri with a 1985 Force 50hp, Model 507X5A, Serial 1608. Motor idles with intermittent miss, quits immediately when put in gear. Idled at dock for 10 min today, never warmed up, and didn't smoke. spit water out exhaust when it missed. Also, there is a creamy oily foam coming out the water intake after I take it out of the water. Checked gear case and no water in there, oil is new and so are the gaskets. Manual is no help.

Anybody have a clue?

Re: Idling problem and more

Could be the air screw.Top front of carb.Turn in till just seats. Then out 1 and 1/8 turn. That not the problem.Do a compression/spark test anyway. The idle rpm in gear in the water should be about 750rpm.
Check for a thermostat. If not there replace and the impeller too.
Ethanol is messing up a lot of motors. It's delaminating the inside of older hoses causing clogs in the carbs and fuel filter.Check for soft hoses and junk in the filter on the motor.Check the diaphram.Install a water/fuel seperating filter.
Post your results. J

I had similar problems with the same boat. Among other things, the fuel pump daiphragm needed to be replaced due to tears causing it to dump fuel.

Re: Idling problem and more

OK, here's what I have so far.

There IS water in the gearbox now. Fortunately, I already have the seal kit for it.
Air screw was out over two turns. Set it to 1 1/8 turn.
Gas filter is good and clean.
Compression. Top cylinder is less than 30 lb, lower is 100. Need to work on that and I wonder it started at all.
Spark plugs - new but fouled by somebody installing them with plumbers joint tape! Wasn't me!

I'm going to do a complete tear-down of the gearbox and install new seals. Will probably wind up taking the power head apart also. At least the cylinder heads. In a car, I would suspect a bad valve. Is that possible with a 2 cycle?

Also, is this engine worth it? I can do the work, assuming a get a manual that doesn't always say, "see procedure in chapter *", but doesn't tell you where in the chapter to look. But I have the opportunity to buy another boat with two motors, one is a 1959 Mercury 50 hp and the other is a 70's Evinrude 55 HP. Total cost = $300. Work on this one, or work on one of the other two? Any opinion's?
