I have a 200hp Johnson ocean pro 1995 that I have not used over the winter I start it up and let it run on an hose for approx. 10 mins once a month. The last two times that I have ran the engine it will not idle under 2000 rpms at first i thought the choke was sticking but I pulled the cowling and it appears that there is no choke linkage. Is ther something that I could look for before thaking it to the shop.

Re: idling to fast

May be sticky throttle cable or trunion out of adjustment.Have you ever messed with the trunion nut on the throttle cable? Also ,that engine should have a quickstart feature that holds rpms up a bit until engine reaches a certain temp. Not 2000 rpms though.Run engine on hose and after a minute or so ,place controls in forward gear to around 2500 rpms and then return to neutral and see if rpms drop or stay at 2000.Try the same in reverse.

Re: idling to fast

thanks for the info no I have not turned or adjusted anything. It was idling at approx 1800rpm not 2000 as I orignally stated I did spray the cables and linkage with some white lith grease and put it in and out of gear and the rpm finally droped to 1300 rpm. I think I will put the boat in the water and run it some and see if the rpm's will come down. If that doesn't work I will probably take it to the shop. It seems that all that linkage is sincronized and I don't want to adjust one thing and make something else out of adjustment.

1300 out of the water with no back pressure is pretty close once it comes out of Quick Start mode. Might be a tad high but once you get it in the water you can fine tune the idle.

Good luck!
