If a coil looks the same as another ... is it?

I have a 90hp 1984 Mariner needing coils and I see people selling them from other HP motors but they look the same. For example, would a 1987 150hp Black Max coil that looks like mine be the same? Is there a difference in the ignition coils based on horse power or are the mostly the same if they look alike?

What about newer model motors from the mid 90's? If it looks similar is it?

Why not look on the parts list and match the part numbers?......looks can be deceiving....

Replacement Coils are available from lots of aftermarket sources. Why not just buy those....

Same coil used on the all the CDI ignitions they just had some updates. earlier coils where orange, then black, then blue. The yellow and green are special coils for the 9.8-25hp motors with phasemaker ignition. The updates where the way coils was grounded and ferrite core.

Thanks for the info. I actually bought some used ones off of a newer V6 motor. These are the deep blue colored ones and they look great and measured great so as soon as the new ignition system gets here I can check them out. I ordered everything new EXCEPT the coils. All new items are CDI brand. Not really sure of the CDI, Sierra or Mallory differences for aftermarket products. The Mallory carries a 2 year warranty (on the switch box that I looked at) and they were reasonable at $107.00 each.
