I'm sure a lot of iboaters have been through this one-- been dropping hints to my wife that I'd like to get a newer, little bit more power boat. She says fine, get another boat if you have to, but you have to get rid of the old one.

Well, my current boat, the first powerboat I've owned, has been a fun little boat, but being a '71 it's showing its age and is a little underpowered to go tubing and maybe boarding with the kids, now that they're getting older. I'd like to get an I/O that moves pretty good, something made later in the last century or maybe even this century.

But I still love my old Saf T Mate, and with its outboard and the trolling motor I picked up a couple seasons ago it's a perfect fishing boat. I really can't see giving her up. But I love my wife too, and she seems pretty insistent-- "you don't need two boats, no way are we paying insurance on two boats, etc etc..." SO...any ideas on smoothing the way to me keeping both, or a good argument for keeping them? It's not like boat insurance is THAT much, and we have room on our property. She's just not a boat person... she tolerates me having one boat, but can't understand why anyone would possibly have to have two boats :(

Just sell that old boat and use the money to buy an even better boat. Can't use two boats at the same time and there are many great fish and ski.

Our second boat came with the house...900 miles away, so the conversation of two boats never came up. If the Starcraft was parked next to the SeaRay, I don't think the conversation would've come up, since one of them would be wearing a "For Sale" sign. Unless the boats have a dramatically different purpose, I don't see a reason to have both.

Now if I had a Bass Tracker, a Master Craft ski boat, a Fountain Lightning, and a SeaRay 400, I could maybe make the case that each boat has a distinct purpose.

Sorry, that may not have been the support that you were shopping for. In your support, though. My lame winterization has left the SeaRay without a motor so the Missouri boat is the only one operational right now. So your justification could be, "Darling, if I ever completely trash a motor on one boat, at least we'll have one to fall back on!"

Tell me if that works for you.

Ask her why she has more than one pair of shoes? Or why she has more than one shade of lipstick? Or why there is more than one knife in the knife block? She can only wear / use one at a time, and you just cant figure out why ANYONE would need more than one! They are for different purposes. One is for fishing, and the other is for family time. Or, ask her why she keeps that box of old memorabilia? To reconnect with the past...which is why you are keeping the old one. Or, tell her the boat insurance annually is less than she spends at the hair / nail salon...and you have nail trimmers and hair scissors at home...so as long as we are cutting "unnecessary expenses..."...

Well Here is my story mind you I was in no way attached to the old boat as it seems you are.

I had a 92 Crownline 196 BR with a 350 OMC, great first boat, very dependable but nothing I was worried about bouncing off the dock. So things were looking great at work and I just had that two footitis thing us Captains get so I started looking around, after a month or so i found this 2000 Crownline 248 BR with 250 hours in immaculate condition about an hour from me so I made an appointment with the Owner to go look at it, MAN what a beautiful boat! the Owner was very meticulous in the care of this boat, never used armor all on it just gentle cleaners and polished it every few months even in the winter, stored year round in a heated garage, I was floored by it all, well I spent several hours talking to the owner and his wife and I told him I wanted it, will take me a couple weeks to get the cash and he agreed.

So two weeks later I inform the wife, daughter (and friend who spent the night) that today we were to take a road trip, loaded everyone in the truck and off we went, an hour later we pull into a decent sized lake and the wife gives me that WTF look husbands know so well, I mean its a beautiful Colorado early spring morning temperature say 45 degrees!! so I just say relax boating season is coming and I wanted to look at a new lake for future reference. 10 minutes later we pull into the ramp area which is nearly completely vacant but there near the ramp is this beautiful 248 so I pull up next to it turn off the truck and greet the owner and his wife and quietly informed both of them that this was the first time either the wife or daughter knew anything of a boat, well the wife comes around the truck and introductions are done the owners wife invites my wife into the boat and shows her around, after about 5 minutes my wife comes to the sunpad on the back of the boat and lies down, reaches over and grabs my hand and says "ok" which is when I asked her if it was ok if we took it for a spin first to make sure it runs first? Took me about a month to sell my old boat to another first timer, see him regularly on the lake, my wife is more confident with the Fuel Injected motor that fires nearly immediately, she is more meticulous on keeping the boat clean then I am even.

I think that once you invest in a new boat the old boat will fall from your memory quickly, the thought that someone else is learning how great boating is by your hand is a pretty great feeling itself. I wouldn't worry about the wife. The other issue is why keep insurance on a boat that is likely to be rarely used anyway??

Or you could just get a new wife.....your choice:D:facepalm:

Sorry Lipp....I like my scenario above better. :D

Told my wife the other day I may have found her a fishing boat...that she hinted at wanting...and she said she changed her mind. We may need to just get a larger boat that we can...ummm..."sleep on"...and keep the Four Winns for family time. Depends on what happens over this next few months. We may end up with some lake / river property soon.

Whoa, thought more iboaters would be seeing it my way!

At least infideltarget is giving me some help and advice on my question... thanks, IT, appreciate it. Unfortunately, she is a very thrifty girl, so I don't know if I can get a lot of traction with that argument.

And DaNinja, your argument is reasoned, but I thought I made my case for the boats being for "a dramatically different purpose". My Saf T Mate is not the greatest for pulling tubers or boarders, but makes a great fishing boat. And you could fish in an I/O fitted out for family/tubing, but it wouldn't be ideal.

Been thinking I could just price my current boat out of range of what anybody would want to pay for it, then shrug my shoulders and say, "nobody seems to want it, honey", but I don't want to jerk people around.

Be very carefull with this direction of engagement. Rules do not apply when directing logic in her direction ROFLMAO.

Seriously, Unless that boat has a very specific purpose, like others have said, then it's a hard sell for her. For you it's not a issue. But then again if something happens to one and a trip is planned you wouldn't have to cancel cause you have a backup. :) Good luck

Or why there is more than one knife in the knife block? ...

Bad analogy!;)

There could be 500 knives in the block. The MOST EXPENSIVE one gets used for everything: cutting tags off of new clothes and shoes, a prybar, a screwdriver, scraper.

Oh, the humanity.

Another reason that's a bad analogy is, I don't think I want to be reminding my wife about knives in the house in the middle of an argument about boats :D

Let us know what she says after you use that argument. But I would leave out the knife part.

Whoa....DON"T GO THERE!!!! I can see that infideltarget has not been married for too long. You can not use rational with women. If you wanna keep the old boat just put a for sale sign on her and price her for more than she is worth. SWEET TALK your wife into buying the new boat now because it may take awhile for someone to buy the old one but yourSURE it will sell. After a few weeks you will still have the old boat and your wife will have her satisfaction because YOU were wrong!

On the flip side my grandfather had a trihull skiboat and brought a john boat home one day to my grandmothers surprise. She was upset, until he said, "this was for all the cigarettes I didn't smoke". She never bugged him again.

Infadel - The shoe argument made me win a few disputes with my g/f. Well every time I do something she doesn't want me to do, she ends up liking it in the end. I say to her do you still think this wasn't worth it :).

16 happy years and counting! I actually have never had to use this argument, because she and I are on the same page 99% of the time anyway. Not to mention I have as many shoes as she does, and the new J.A. Henckles knives are WAY too expensive to use for cutting tags, so we kept the old set too, for just such occasions. She was a cosmetology instructor, and worked at an exclusive salon years ago, so she does her own hair / nails anyway (or friends come to the house and do it for her). Besides, I make sure she has everything her heart desires, so when I want something, she can't veto it. ;) See? My own advice doesnt even apply to me. But YOU fee free to use it and let me know how it works out for ya'! :D

(I have a nice 31' travel trailer I can rent out to ya' to stay in...you know...after she throws all her shoes at you, and chases you out of the house with that one knife ;) )

I have been married for just about 3 years, and yes girlfriends and wives are different. On my wedding day my wifes father pulled me aside and gave me some of the best advice I had ever recieved. He looked me in the eyes and very seriously said, "Be careful, women don't think like real people, the sooner you can realize that, the better off you will be". As far as I can tell, he was spot on. My fater-in-law is a retired Coast Guard BMCM so he has some cedibility in my book :)

Could not have said it better myself. My wife is not all that happy with the three boats I have sitting in the yard. Well one in the yard and two in the garage at the moment. But she tolerates it, so on the flip side i dont complain when she comes home with a couple bags of clothes, becuase in reality we are both cheap to an extent. She is a bargain shopper and I am too.

But I agree with what someone said before, once you get you new boat you will rarely use your old one. I went to the ranger dealership the other day and looked at a 18ft fish and ski... man was it pretty. But had I brought that home I would have had to borrow ITs camper.....lolololol

The new boat is going to burn twice as much, or more, in fuel than your trusty ol' fishing boat. The savings occured while using your fishing boat will make up for the cost.

Good Luck, Mike!
