1995 Bayliner 2050ls with the 5.0 Mercruiser V8 for $4,000. In need of new engine. I found some posts talking about the ability to replace it with a automotive chevy 305 (after changing over to brass plugs and new camshaft?). I would be able to use all other parts off the old engine.

Or if I need a marine engine, is it possible to get one for around a grand?

Is this a smart way to get a good boat for $5,000?

I would walk away from that deal...

Marine engine or automotive, either way, a good remanufactured engine from an auto parts store will set you back (at bare minimum) a grand, but more like $1500-$2000 simply because you will need more than just and engine... Things like carburator rebuild kits, distributor cap & rotor, spark plugs, and other little "odds and ends" will add up $$$$...

Hi, Mike.

It would probably be a way to get a good boat for $4K plus repowering, but that isn't a good boat. :(

There must be a bunch of reasons that Bayliner owners rate (according to JD POWER) them as the worst boat made (of those surveyed).

I agree with Snapperbait. Pass.

I agree with the above comments. I have known of two bayliners in the last year to crack their hulls. They were both in my area...TN river...so no hard waves. Last they were both newer than a 92.
