If not a spun prop, then what?

Hi, I have posted before about our "water in the oil" problem that turned out well! We took out boat out for the first test after performing many repairs includeing, changing oil and filter, replacing outdrive water pump and shift shaft seal, rebuilding starter motor, correcting the incorrect wiring on the alternator, new battery, etc...
The first test was a success!! After almost 3 hours running at a plane, with occasional WOT, we checked the oil and found NO water contamination. This confirms our suspicion that the boat was submerged rather than frozen. We could not be happier at this point. At the end of the day, we were heading back and saw a day cruiser jamming along and figured we would see how our boat goes. Well, we moved up to WOT and we were keeping up with it, if not just a little faster! Proud as a peacock! After about 1-2 minutes of this, i noticed a "wavering" of engine RPM. It would seem to loose speed on and off. I was watching the rpm (the tach has been unreliable), the oil presure, temperature the whole time. As far as the rpm is concerned, it was almost pegged at 5 grand, the temp was at or under 175, oil presure over 40 psi,,,,bacially no problem. After throatleing back, the engine ran fine, no noises, temp was fine, no oil leaks, no water leaks, etc.. My buddy is a certified mechanic and also detected no obvious engine problems. So, I slowly throtled up again and this time it sounded like the engine would temporarily "race",, not consistant, just on and off. This was with partail throttle, before on a plane. My buddy said he felt a vibration, I did not. At this point we headed back to the dock and back on the trailer. I examined the prop today and have included pics. I am hoping that its not the drive coupler. Any opinions will be appreciated.

Two passengers under 115 lbs
Two Captains 200-230 lbs ea.
Two mangey mutts 25 lbs each
1 aluminum prop 14.5 dia. x 19 pitch

I could not find any glarring problem with the prop and internal parts.

We did notice that the boat came with "spare parts" in the form of additional prop internal plastic hubs, bronze washers, etc....

At 5000 rpm, I would say you were hitting the rev limiter in the ECM. It kicks in at 5100. Your MAX WOT rpm should not exceed 4800 rpm. You are under propped and hitting the rev limiter, that's all. The ECM shuts down injectors till the rpm come down, then it turns them back on.

Now wouldn't that be a good problem to have!! But,,,, after the incedent, we tested the engine again, and it did the same thing while slowly increasing throttle even prior to planning and, I would only guess, at approx. 2500-3500 rpm.

Re: If not a spun prop, then what?

Howdy,

I had a similar problem with a 150 (6cyl) Mercruiser several years ago.

It only did it a couple of times.....right before I pulled the boat out for the day...... I didn't think anything of it. (actually I did)

When I took the boat back to the lake a few weeks later, it acted like it would not go into gear.(although it did) the prop was not turning.....I had to paddle back to the launch-ramp because I had pushed it away from the dock......

Turns out the coupler "spun"..... When I pulled the engine, it appeared that someone had carefully drilled out the aluminum inner splines of the coupler! the yoke, was un-damaged.

I always thought that a spun coupler would only result in a burning rubber smell and rubber powder in the back.

The coupler was only 39 years old though.....other than the engine R&R, it was pretty easy to replace....

regards,

Rick
