Hi all...

So I made the mistake of going to a few auto body shops and asking them about self etching primers, and paint, and such... after some quotes of over $200 just for primer I figured I would come here.

I have a '52 Alumacraft 16' tinny.

Wire brushed down to bare aluminum, with the exception of the floor which has some old non-skid paint.

I want to prime the entire boat, and am unsure if a self etching primer is worth it.

If you had your choice of primer and paint for my boat, what would your recommend?

Budget is a small issue... but if I space it out, shouldn't be to big of a concern, but not going overboard if possible.

Was thinking 2 coats of primer, and 2 coats of topside paint, 2 tone idea...

Here is a shot of her after the Gluvit was laid.

Primer I would recommend http://www.jmsonline.net/media/cata...525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/1/1/114-025472_2_1.jpg
Self -etching primers from auto parts stores are for steel, even manufacturer mentioned aluminum. Price is same. Over primer you can spray almost anything. Check this threads:http://forums.iboats.com/boat-restoration-building-hull-repair/steps-prep-aluminuim-pics-457159.html and this one http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...lly-started-w-pics-384982-10.html#post3302799.

Vinegar wash, Zinc Chromate Primer, and as far as paint...... Awlgrip (really costly but the marine equivalent to Imron) or Interlux a bit less money, or low end rustoleum. The Zinc Chromate primer is the key over bare aluminum ;)

Do I need, or could I, if desired... follow up with a base coat of white primer? I have always felt that a bright white primer really makes colors pop more than just going over bare metal.
