This is an interesting story and to be honest I don't know what I would do.

----------------------------------------------------
Transgendered Substitute Teacher Back to Work in Eagleswood
Tuesday, February 28, 2006 - Millennium Radio New Jersey

The Eagleswood Board of Education has decided to accept the re-application of a transgendered teacher, despite some concern from parents.

For five years...Lily McBeth worked as a substitute teacher in the Eagleswood school district as "Mr. William McBeth." After undergoing a sex change operation last year...The 71-year-old is eager to return to the classroom. McBeth says, "I try to teach the children and they also teach me, they teach me about myself."

But some parents believe the sex change could cause confusion among younger students at Eagleswood Elementary School, where the kids range between ages four and 12, and it could disrupt their ability to learn.

Cindy Tindall, a concerned parent, says it's a lot for a child to digest when a "Mr." turns into a "Miss." "I think that if Lily had come here as Lily, and applied to be a teacher, I would not have a problem with it," adds Tindall.

Steve and Lisa Bond have one child at the school, and another who will soon be entering. Steve says parents have a right to be worried, adding, "I don't feel that little children at that age should be exposed to that, because they're not capable of absorbing that kind of decision-making process from a mature standpoint."

Others feel the sex change should not be an issue at all. Leandra Bourdot and Jennifer Hinchman, both former students of McBeth's, give praise to the teacher. "McBeth is very competent. There's so many less competent substitute teachers, and I don't see how becoming a woman could change anything," says Bourdot.

McBeth says the human soul is what makes us all equal, and that should be the judge of everyone. "A soul has no gender...a soul is a spirit, and we all have one," says McBeth.

Eagleswood school officials say it's unclear when McBeth can officially resume teaching, adding it depends on when substitutes are needed.

Re: If you where the parent what would you do?

Well; first off..I am not a parent...just a 50 something guy without that sort of responsibility.

I wonder just how much will be revealed or discussed about the teacher's private life outside of the classroom? I wouldn't imagine that any of the other teachers discuss their private lives with their students; neither inside or outside of the class proper. So; unless it is common knowledge in that community...it might never come up.

Hogwash; I suppose. Kids will find out somehow and the rumours will fly. Children's imagination will take over...and the truth will all of a sudden become far more "Sane" than the products of their wild imaginations.

So; that would lead to a forced open discussion...just to stem the tide of the rumours. I don;t think that kids under 10 should be dealing with that...although in this day of the internet...the older kids probably already have an understanding of transgender...and the discussion would be positive for them.

Ideally; any decision should be made based on the teacher's ability to teach. As a non-parent...that's easy for me to say.
Thanks for reading....Chuck

Well one thing I noticed, it took him/her long enough to figure that they were in the wrong body.

As for the kids, they are a lot smarter than some parents give them credit for, but at the same time, they are real impressionable.

Like jg, don't know what I would say if I had kids in that school.

Yeah Spinner, There was an interview on the radio with a former student that said the Mr./Ms. McBeth was a good sub teacher. I am just not sure if he/she should be in an elementry school setting although it is liable to cause more disruption in a high school setting. I'm honest enough to admit that I not sure if I'm leary because I would not wish to have to have the discussion with my 6 year old. the old ostrich syndrome, put my head in the sand and hope the issue goes away, this kinda forces a discussion that you may not be ready for.

There's lots of other places for the teacher to
teach. Where the decision to to become a she will
go unnoticed. Less confusion for the children and
the teacher can stay in his /her profession.
Besides what kind of an example is a 71 year
old cross dresser teaching kids. Thats pathetic.

He could sign up & I would think that they would not have to call shim for work.....
It would most likely be sticky legally to refuse employment on that basis alone...
That said, its just creepy.....
It took shim 71 years to figure it out? :D
At least he had the 'er....ba.....Uh......fortitude to go through with it....
Guys....They a'int just talking about cross dressing here ;)
I know if it was my kids teacher, I wouldn't like it....
It's hard enough being a kid without dealing with stuff like that.......JK

live and let live...the kids are far more accepting then they are ever given credit for and we as adults could learn alot from them.
race, gender, nationality, politlcal opinions and all other forms of prejudice are learned from the grown up's around them and i would be willing to bet that not one of the kids will grow up scared for life or decide to change there sex based on there grade school teacher.

I would most likely reinstate her/him whatever, after having her/him whatever, take a through psychological exam which most likely her/him would not pass.

tylerin, LOL :D

Mr. Kopec, you are a disgrace to your political bretheren . . . err . . . sisteren . . . eh . . . whatever . . . :)

luckyjim7, I agree, live and let live. Children need to live without confusion induced by an incredibly selfish, 71 year old, idiot. I would picket. This is not about political correctness, this is not about keeping an open mind, this is not about discrimination. This is about the innocence of children and our RESPONSIBILITY to maintain that innocence as long as possible.

One thing most are ignoring is that children, particularly small ones, are not judgemental and don't carry a lot of phobia baggage. They accept this sort of thing with. . ."Oh. Okay. What time is recess?"

If she has a problem I think it will be with adults, not children.

Re: If you where the parent what would you do?

JB,

I only judged by the selfishness of returning to the teaching profession, not the operation or orientation. The point I am trying to make is that 10 year olds (prolly not 5 year olds) will come home and ask their parents "what is up with that?". Which forces the parents to discuss something that hopefully is delayed a little (lot) longer . . .

As I have said before, I wish no harm to any decent human being, and decent to me has nothing to do with trans anything. I do wish that individuals didn't undo in 2 minutes what some parents have worked hard for 10+ years to protect.

JB , Sounds like its been a while since you
remember what its like to be a child. Children are not
judgemental of their elders. They are
very judgmental of their piers.
The don't carry phobias into the classroom.
But they most definitely carry out a lot of baggage
from misguided Adult orientational garbage.
I send my children to school to be taught academics
Not someones else's ideas of sexuality, or sexual orientation or deviation.

Re: If you where the parent what would you do?

I'm with NOSLEEP on this one. Kids can be cruel, being different is the kiss of death in children’s social circles. Just try and dress your child differently and send them to school on a regular basis. You will quickly see just how cruel kids can be. As soon as one student discover what’s different about the new sub. and the information is passed through the class room, his/her effectiveness as a teacher will be compromised. And it will not be long before every student in the school knows.

Re: If you where the parent what would you do?

I think that this is the way todays world is headed. There is no way to shelter our children from people like this. It could do more damage in the years to come if we did shelter our children from people with ideas and views like this.
On the other hand I would rather not have my young child in a classroom with a teacher, a person in a position of respect like this. I don't so much have a problem with people who change their sexes, but I might end up with a problem if his views are expressed to my child. I would rather not have my childs teacher thrusting ideas onto my child that if you don't like something you can hide it and change what God has made you to be.
Maybe God has made him to be a chanagling, I am not the one to decide.

I do know it would cause confusion in young children but only if adults or the teacher him/herself talked about it. Older children would definately be cruel about it, while older students would be a mixed lot. Some would make fun, some would be curious, some would just be confused.

This is a sign of our world. There is not much we can do about it.
