I have a electrical issue on my boat

It's a Doral 250sc 1997, V8 5.7LX Mercruiser (thunderbolt V) with Bravo2.

Last weekend, I was boating and running at 1700rpm and the IGNITION fuse blow. It's 20amp fuse, and I didn't have any spare 20amp fuse so I've insert 10amp fuse in. It did work, so I immediatly get back to dock.

Next day, I've...
  • replace the IGNITION fuse with the correct 20amps fuse
  • check the IGNITION circuit to make sure no other equipement have been added to it
  • check every ground found on the fuse panel and electrical board and make sur no one was loose
....and start the engine. The problem didn't come back.

What do you suggest? Should I replace the ignition controle module or anything else?

I'm the kind of guy that maintain a boat engine exactly like a plane! I really dont want any chance of engine fault.

Re: Ignition 20amp fuse blow

I would look to see exactly what is on the circuit / any 12v accessory plugs? gauges ? etc.

Is thier any chance something could have gotten wet.

I also tend to be very proactive when I can --- but I would probably replace the fuse as you did & see if it happens again if I could not easily pinpoint the malfunction that might have caused it. Keeping a close watch on the operation of everything on that ckt.

You could spend a lot of time & money that's not needed on something like this. Intermittent issues are sometimes hard to pin down. For a repaeting short anything that can creat a path to ground is suspect , wires, components, moisture etc.

Good luck
