i have a 1987 merc 70 3cyl. i believe i have a bad connection in one of my 3 coils so i ordered a new one. i seem to loose spark on the top cylinder on cold starts, if i take out the wire move it around etc it will pick up, i tried cleaning the crud out of the hole etc and it never seems to be a perm fix, so now im replacing it. i already replaced plugs and wires so we can rule those out....

never done this before, i do have mechanical knowledge, just wondering if its as easy at it looks? looks like i pull the motor cowl and the cover over the coils, remove the 2 wires, slide coil out, slide new in, replace wires etc and go right???? anything im missing or helpful tips etc. thanks!

Yes , it's very easy to change. You could have swapped 2 coils to see if the loss of spark moves. Swap the wire you moved around with a known good one to see if you have constant spark. There is always a possibilty of a stator/trigger issue.

i thought of that, but its odd, if i keep the boat in the water for 2 weeks after i get it running good its fine, once i trailer it i almost always loose the spark on that one cyl. jiggle it around and smack it a few times and its back for the entire day, its very odd lol, and when i bought the boat the PO had rubber cemented the crap out of the old wire and coil port to keep it in good and tight, so something tells me theres been a issue here for a while. and i cant get all the cement crap out of the hole, i dont think the coil is shot, i think its all crudded up and loosing good contact...
could be stator or trigger, hope not, boat only has 150 hours if that
