I got a 1981 Evinrude 35 hp that I overheated do to water pump failure. It got hot enought to melt the plastic around the coils. It runs alright till I put it in gear then in about five minutes it dies and wont start . Think if I replace both coils that that will fix it or not?I have had it idling for up to half an hour in a tank no problems.

Droog<br />Sound like you cook the coils. Back in the late 70's Ford had a problem with the fender mounted ingintion modules overheating( driving down road car would just quit, Fast fix wasto take a gallon of water and pour over module)You could ohm out the coils from Pri to Secondary and the pri to ground and sec to ground. You can find ingition coil testing in any automotive manual provide the car had a coil. Your manual my have the same test.

I would change the coils as they probably are arcing to the block due the meltdown.

agree -- think it is wise just to replace the coils. There is no point in risking a day's boating fun.

Do a compression check. Thats where I'd start. I once overheat a snowmobile engine. The engine would start hard and idle, but once you gave it any throttle it bogged down and died. I took the engine apart and the rings were bad and the cylinders all scored up.
