1980 Johnson 55 2 cylinder. 55EL80C
Hi
One of my ignition coils is dripping a brown waxy substance onto the head cover. It is what should be the brown, hard plastic that the coil is set in, but it has the texture of bubble gum. On the other coil, the same substance feels like hard plastic. The engine is not over heating, and the coil isn't even warm to the touch when the engine is running. The motor is running fine, but this can't be right.

I asked at my local repair shop, and they said they hadn't heard of anything like it before. They said that when a coil goes bad, they generally go hard and crack, not soft and runny! They said it may have been a manufacturing fault.

First of all, has anyone ever heard of this happening before? and what could be causing it?

I will replace the coil, (even though the engine is running fine), as I've read that a bad ignition coil can ruin a powerpack, but I don't want to replace the coil if there is an underlying problem that might ruin the new coil.

Also, is it O.K to replace just one coil, or should I replace them both?

Thanks in advance.
Steve

O.K, thanks.

I'll order a new coil. Does anyone have a part number for this coil? Engine model number is 55EL80C, serial number is 5011723.

Thanks.
Steve

Re: Ignition coils.

I melted a coil just like that on my 1965 Johnson 75hp about 20 yrs ago. It happened by accidently leaving the ignition key on for a few days. I can't remember why it happens but it may be due to the system using a resister wire instead of internal resister in the coil. I replaced it with a standard auto coil with internal resistor...no problems.
