I got the battery connected to the motor and the ignition harness plugged at motor but no response. Do I at least need to ground ignition ? I apologize for my ignorance.

Most modern ignitions are alternator driven. There is no need for a battery. To be sure, you need to post year and HP of the motor.

Don't mess with it until you sure what you are doing, or you may burn something out.

It is a 1987 90HP. I can crank engine with a jumper so it is not the starter. I will look for fuse holder. I am also trying to get my trim and tilt working and notice they are somewhat intertwined (I got several loose wires here). Solenoid, I always think of starter but realize it is a generic term. TD could you please confirm which solenoid ?

thanks

solenoid is an electric switch, activated by the key switch. the positive battery cable runs to the solenoid and another cable from solenoid to starter.

Yup it does. Mine has a fused 10 ga wire from the key switch marked B going to the motor.

TD, the fuse was OK. It was a loose wire. Actually there are too many loose wires and I got to figure out where they go, of course with a little help from you guys.
