Bondo is right. Mercruiser never used a V6 engine with points ignition. They have always been electronic.
Do yourself a favor, get a Mercruiser service manual for your engine. Depending on the year, you could have either a Thunderbolt IV or V. They have different methods of setting timing.

My 1972 Mercruiser 325 has an OLD Thunderbolt ignition. I recently had to "patch" wires leading from the hall sensor to the switch box. Replacement costs for these two units are $$$. If either fails, I wonder if I can substitute a generic electronic ignition/distributor. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Don

Don, in the future, start your own thread. Many times people that have looked at this thread won't come back because it wasn't something they wanted to comment on. Therefore, they would miss your question.
To answer your question, yes, any generic MARINE distributor will work. But DO NOT go with an automotive distibutor.
Don't have any advance specs on your 427 Chevy marine engine (See that Bondo??? :D )so not sure what distributors are available for them.

Ayuh,..........I Suspected it would be the 427,.... I figured I'd Ask, instead of Guess......
I Know how much You Love telling Me when My Guesses are Wrong............

I wonder if a Dist. out of a later model Big Block will Drop In,..???....
Say a used 454 T-Bolt IV from ebay or something,..???....

I really like the ThunderBolt system,.........
Simple,+ Reliable............ ;)
