I have a 1995, 40 HP Mercury on a Sweetwater pontoon. Motor would not start with good battery and starter. It started when bypassing starter solenoid. I replaced starter solenoid and seemed to work okay on land with water from hose running through motor. When boat is in water, it starts okay but after a minute or two running in water, starter horn (horn alert in the start position) comes on and stays on. Motor appears to run fine except for starter horn remaining on. When I pull it out of the water, the horn stops.
I pulled the wires of the starter solenoid and checked for a wire that may have been left off. The wiring appears okay. Any advice is appreciated.
