Re: ignition is dead

1) The purple wire on the fuel gauge has +12 volts on it. When you touched a wire to it and ground you created a short circuit just like sticking a bobby pin into a wall outlet at home. Don't do that any more.

2) Yes -- you blew a fuse or popped a breaker in the engine compartment. If you don't know where they are, this would be a good time to download a diagram for your drive and get familiar with where stuff like this is located and having spares on board. A 50 cent fuse or being able to locate a breaker and push the button is a heck of a lot cheaper than a tow and trip to a shop.

Re: ignition is dead

There should be a 20A fuse under the helm in the red wire coming from the engine harness to the ignition switch B terminal.

Item 24 in this diagram

Re: ignition is dead

What is the FULL model number of your engine? The serial number may help also.

I will be moving this over to the Volvo forum, it it's working.

Re: ignition is dead

The NC is the part I needed. When you first turn the igntion switch on, do you hear the fuel pumps run for 2 seconds then shut off?
There are several different circuit breakers on the engine.

Re: ignition is dead

If you can hear the pump come on for 2 seconds, then it works. I doubt your fuel tank plugged up while you tried fixing your fuel gauge and blew the fuse, perhaps you need to explain exactly what your problem is.

Re: ignition is dead

Hi Don, before I tried to fix fuel gauge I when to the bay and it would,t start. I took off fuel line because it seemed like no fuel was getting to engine the boat ran perfect last week. In between the last time I ran it I put new stereo in and I bumped the hot lead that powers stereo . Could that of caused some sort of problem? Everything else is working properly. I tested the two wires that go to pump with ignition on and no power. Is that normal. Could the relay be bad. I'm lost don,t know were to go from here. Thanks jonz

Re: ignition is dead

Sounds to me like you need to start disconnecting the battery when working on things.

If the engine cranks over with the starter, check for spark from the coil.

Re: ignition is dead

do relays act up some times?

Sure, It's called an intermittent problem. Corrosion can do it, a faulty relay could do it.
It's working now, that's a good thing. I wonder how long that will last?
