Ignition noise

When I turn my ignition to "on" it makes a little whistle or beep and then stops. Today, while flushing the motor after a day in the bay, the beep continued intermittently while the motor was running and switch at the "on" position. Any ideas? It has never done this before.

Re: Ignition noise

the initial beep tells you the warning horn is operational....if it sounds while the engine's running, it's a warning...of what, depends on make/model of engine and pattern of beeps.

I've got a '91 Evinrude 90HP. The "beep" comes from under the dash, not the horn. I thought the horn sounds engine warnings? The beep was intermittent, about 10 seconds apart.

That is an engine warning and I suggest you get it fixed. It's an OIL related warning.

I checked the VRO tank and it is about 1/4 full. I checked the manual and it describes a horn every 20 seconds as a low oil warning, so I think this could be it. I'll fill up the reservoir and see if it happens again. It does bother me, though, how low the "beep" is. I don't think I'd hear it WOT on the water.

It could be the over heat buzzer , maybe your getting air pockets in your cooling system causing the buzzer to go off or no enough water flow with your muffs on.

Fill your VRO tank then worry about the beep. They like to stay full. Some warning horns are in the control box and others are located where convenient in the wiring harness. Under the dash would also be a good location.

Usually the beep comes on for a second when power is applied to the ignition and as j mentioned is there to tell you that it is working.

My son has a ProCraft and it has a light on the dash in addition to the horn, so if you can't hear it you can at least see it.

If your beep is intermittent, the fact that you were on muffs, probably had nothing to do with it other than the fact that you were running your engine. Over temp warning is a solid blast.

Will never forget the first time I got a low oil alarm. Kept hearing this funny noise and it took awhile for me to come to my senses and realize what it was. The tank was about 1/3 full too. So after that, I just top it off after ever trip and have had no problems since.

Re: Ignition noise

If the horn sounds for 1/2 second every 30 - 40 seconds, that signifies a "low" oil warning (oil level is low in the tank). If the horn sounds for 1/2 second every second (much faster rate) that signifies "no oil" meaning the no oil is being delivered to the engine. That means there is something wrong with the oil system that needs immediate attention. Make sure you know which of these alarms you are hearing.
