I checked the internet and got a price of approximately $60.0 for a Sierra power pack.<br />I decided to go with my local OMC dealer for a unit that cost $160.<br /><br />Is it worth #100 extra for a direct OMC replacement instead of a cheaper After market supplier ??<br />I was worried about such a large price diference if the cheaper unit was the same quality and would fit without any problems.

There's been lots of discussions about that. The Sierra unit will work. Lots of the guys here say to go with the oem unit. Now OMC don't manufacturer those units. Sierra doesn't either. Question is, does the same manufacturer make it for both? What's the difference? Does anybody know for sure or is it just speculation? I'd like to know to.<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

Hi Hooty:<br />For the extra $100 I could have gotten a back-up too if I went with Sierra..I was just a fraid to take the chance. You know the old saying. "If it sounds too good"<br />Thanks for your reply. Hope more people have a thought on this subject.

I don't doubt for a minute that an OEM part is what you should get, but you are paying for that name brand, also. Tough call, but I think you made the right decision. After all, they too, have to install and back those very same parts when they repair an outboard themselves. So I would say they are getting them from the most reliable source possible...

I hear CDI Electronics makes some of the electronics for the major manufacturers. Powerpacks $90. Had mine for 3yrs, no problems.

ReelDrag <br /><br />I've heard the same thing from a lot of guys here and have even recommended them a few times, so they must be decent and the price is right...

I just replaced my regulator with a CDI unit, $65. Looks like a better design than the original. It has cooling vanes that extend down into the water cavity.

Sierra packs are fine. I ran one for over 15 years, kept the original OEM pack as a spare, but never needed it. My father used Sierra packs all the time in his marine business w/o problems.
