Ignition Problem?

Ok. I've been working on this motor for some time. I have a 1981 40HP Mercury Outboard. Two cylinder, automatic start. I finally was able to start it yesterday. As I was adjusting the idle and letting the gunk run out of the carb the engine suddenly stopped. After looking around for a bit I noticed that a black and white wire that runs underneith the flywheel had gotten caught in the flywheel and was cut in half. I quickly replaced the wire and now still do not get any fire.

Does anyone know what this could be? Should I try and pull the flywheel and check to see how the wires look under there?

P.S. The Black/White wire that broke was run underneath the firewall with another wire that, if I remember correctly, was black/yellow but possibly brown/yellow.

Re: Ignition Problem?

I couldn't find anything on on a black/white wire. There is a brown/white and a brown/yellow wire that go from the trigger to the switchbox. Is this what you have? a black with yellow stripe is a engine stop wire that runs from the mercury switch and connects to the key off on the ignition switch. This is also connected to the switch box. If your wires goes to the trigger, they might have pulled loose. Trigger can be tested by checking resistance between the brown/white and the brown yellow. You should have between 750 and 1400 ohms.

Yeah. I couldn't find anything about a black/white wire in my manual either. I swear it looks black/white though. Maybe it is just faded and doesn't show its real colors. When you say switchbox what are you referring to?

Would that be under the flywheel?

Re: Ignition Problem?

The red and blue wires from the stator connect to it.
