Sounds like a faulty switch, not breaking power to coil.
if you have a test light see if power drops when key is turned to off position.
Coil power needs to stop to stop motor, thus dropping power at the points
or electronic spark control.
If power does not drop can burn points (or electronic module)
Good luck. can temp fix with toggle switch in power line.
