So last week I pulled the distributor cap for inspection after seeing as how the spark plugs looked to be completely worn and shot (I'm the new owner of the boat). I see the cap and rotor are just as worn and terrible looking. I pick up replacements.
Wow that rotor was on there solid. Could be from years of neglect or maybe that's how they are. I had socket extensions in there and was forcing up so hard I thought something was going to snap and hit me in the face. I eventually put leather gloves on because I was pushing so hard if I slipped I was gonna have some seriously busted up knuckles. This went on for a while really working at it. I eventually had to get a crow bar. I thought it was going to break the main distributor housing. Unreal. I eventually got it off. The shaft was surface rusted as expected. I used some sand paper and cleaned it all up. I wanted to put some electrical dielectric grease on but was all out and we were heading to the lake. So I had some Ford PTFE lube (Teflon) that I put on there in hopes that rotor will come off some day. What do you guys use on the shaft before installing the rotor?
Also I noticed that I can grab the rotor and wiggle back and forth like the distributor and cam gear have some play in them. Is this a common "boat" thing or my gears worn? On car engines it's typically very solid with no back and forth wiggle room.
Thanks
Malcolm
