Ignition Safety switch

I believe my safety switch has been unhooked, the reason I say this is because it will start in gear. My Clymer manual shows I have one in the electrical diagram ('88 Renken 2000 5.7 Mercruiser).

If I indeed have a switch where is it located and how do I get to it?

Is there a way to test to make sure the switch works before I hook it back up?

Re: Ignition Safety switch

In the cases I have seen, it is part of the remote control - that is, the shifter(s). It prevents you from starting in gear. The switch is open when in gear and closed when in neutral. Look below/behind the shift for two wires. Check it with an ohm meter/ multimeter.

I have very little accessibility to the back of the control box, can I get to it by taking off the throttle control arm? The wires will not be inside the control lever itself right?
