Ignition stuck in off -1998 ford mustang

Hi,
I've got a 1998 ford mustang 3.8 engine that has the ignition is stuck in off with key in and it will not turn to on or start. I've tried wiggling the wheel,moving the automatic shifter, but nothing works.Any Ideas on how to free this locked up state.would my ignition lock need to be replaced?This car has an electrical gear selector at the transmiision,could that be causing this problem?Thanks

Even though Ford keys are double cut they only have one set of pins in the ignition. Try to start the car from both sides of the key and try moving the key in and out as you turn it.

Ignition may be worn of the steering wheel lock is engaged real hard in one direction or another.

yes,I have tried that, and even another set of keys and it still stays locked.

IF, you get the key to tun again DO NOT turn it off (to the lock position) because it needs to be in the run position for normal removal procedure. If it won't turn on again the lock cylinder will have to be destroyed to be removed (read expensive).

Dont forget that even though you can get a key cut to match it wont work because it has a "chip" in it

the keys for this car doesnt have a chip.

My 1999 Windstar does that sometimes. My wife has trouble with it, but I have alway managed to get to work by by turning the wheel and turning the key at the same time, maybe even tilting the wheel up and down. Maybe try putting your foot outside the door and rocking the car back and forth a little. It can really be trying on you.

got it to turn on today,and I am replacing the switch.

Fairlane you were right about a chip in the key.I put a new lock and tumbler in and found out I have to have the key flashed at the dealership with title.
I sure am glad I was able to get the old lock to turn.

Well, all you really have to do is put the old key hidden close to the steering column and any key will work as it will connect to that chip. the only thing is that then you have disabled that security feature... But thieves know how to do that anyway...
