I have a 73 johnson 40HP and would like to hook the electric start up. The wires look to be these colors Brown W/white stripe, red, tan, and two black. Also can i just buy a switch at an auto parts store?

You may be able to get a switch from your local NAPA Auto Parts. Just tell them it is for a Johnson Outboard and has 5 terminals.

Fred.... You need a ignition switch that has six(6) terminals on the back of it labeled "B, C, A, S, M, M,". The "tan" wire you speak of, I think you will find upon close inspection, is actually white. However, I will refer to it as "tan" so as not to cause confusion.

You can use a five (5) terminal switch as Bill states if you do not need the "A" terminal

The terminals on the back of the six terminal switch and the related wiring would be:

B (Bat) = Red
C (Choke) = Brown/white stripe
A (Accessories) = Anything you want 12 volts applied to when the key is in the ON position.
S (Solenoid) = Tan (Actually white?)
M (Magneto) = Black
M (Magneto) = Black

The two black wires lead to the magneto points. When they are connected together via the switch, the ignition is killed, stopping the engine.

Joe is right.
I forgot that the 5 terminal is usually used when there is a seperate push button for the choke. The 6 terminal has the push to choke on the switch itself.
