I noticed when starting my engine yesterday that the starter was not turning when ignition switch was pushed into the choke position, (key pushed in) if key was turned without holding in the choke position it operated starter better, can ignition switch be cleaned with switch cleaner? I have renewed main cables with new terminals at both ends but still starter motor fails,it only turns about half revolution and does not engage but appears to be better when not in choked position, I am about to replace starter brushes as solonoid clicks in every time? I would first check the wiring and switches for shorts. Use an ohm meter and check the continutity of the Wiring going to the switches in off, start,on and choke. make sure all conections are clean and tight.

Re: Ignition switch on OMC control box.

The solenoid contact across the two larger poles (one from battery and the other to the starter) may be burnt and not making good contact across the poles. It may click every time but mot make good contact internally. Unfortunately, the solenoid is a sealed unit. If you can find another solenoid, try it. The ignition switch just puts 12V across the solenoids coil to pick up the main solenoid contact plate.

Don't know the age of the starter and such....but a dirty commutator and worn brushes will cause the same problem.

With a meter, check to see if you are getting 12 Volts to the selonoid(With and without the choke engaged). Then to check the starter, jump across the selonoid battery terminal(Large one) directly to the starter terminal(Large one) and see if the starter operates correctly. If these check out, replace the selonoid.
