Does anybody know where I can get the part number for the Ignition switch to a 40473s model engine? Please don't say the manual because I just ordered one from this site and while it does have a lot of good info.... no part numbers on the switch.

I can't cross that exact model number, but I beleave all the 40hp engines in that year all used the same switch, 379047 which changes to 386545.

Thank you. All the places I've tried crossing usually drop the s. Now I can get the switch ordered and get it installed. I used the manual today to rewire the box in the back with the solenoid switch. He had them all messed up.

379047 is what I came up with also.

Thanks, I ordered one yesterday. Since the boy had the solenoid switch out, although I've already wired it in I can't make a positive id on it. It says RA0906 and is black & metal rather than all metal as shown in the pictures. I am going to order that too.

At a boat retail shop close to me the guy said that these engines weren't very good and he would junk it. He said it wasn't worth spending a dime on and was unreliable. I haven't a clue in this stuff but people here are quite knowledgeable. I guess what I'm asking is, what are your opinions on this?

Compression, spark, fuel.

Compression check will tell you alot about condition, and if you want to dig in and save it. It could be a good motor.........

Thanks. The guy had me worried a bit when he said that type of motor wasn't worth working on. He said he would just trash it. Bear in mind this guy has never saw it. The compression checks ok. I can't test the ignition until I get it all rewired. I talked with the guy who sold it to the guy I bought it from, he said it ran good. The one I bought it from decided he would rewire it. I know nothing about boats and apparently neither did he. Instead of learning about them he just started on it. Hopefully he hasn't shorted anything out. When I placed the positive on the battery it started to turn over, so I stopped. He had it hot wired.

I was kind of worried when the guy at the boat dealership said it wasn't worth anything and that model never was good nor would it ever be good.

Personally I think those old 40 horse engines were pretty good old engines, easy to work on and ran pretty good.

No good??? You gotta be kidding. Those motors were OMC's bread and butter back then and some of OMC's best years. Built like a tank and super reliable. If there is any problem with them it is the fact that this is 2010 and it is 46 years old. That means it has had 46 years to suffer misuse and abuse, wear and tear. If it isn't worn out, it will probably be around another 40 years.

Bulletproof and tough as nails as long as you don't skimp on them. These motor were produced back in the day when ethenol wasn't in the gas. They do need some modernization when running with today's fuels, new lines, inline filters and such and they will run like a Timex. I just went through an issue with the exact same motor next door. They'd get it out and for the last month it's gotten progressively worse, wouldn't go full throttle and would dog. I pulled the carb saturday and cleaned out LOTS of rubber, back together with all new lines, should be ok now.
