ignition switch question

I have a 1992 225hp Johnson. It will not turn over now when I turn the key. I can however start it easily from the selenoid and it runs fine, and kills when I turn off the key. When the key is turned on, I have no juice to either of the two small connections of the selenoid. Is this telling me that my ignition switch is bad, or the selenoid? If it is the switch, can that alone be changed, or do I have to replace the entire wire harness? Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: ignition switch question

yes you can replace the ignition switch only disconnect the wire harness from switch replace switch and reconnect the wires some switches have no harness quick disconnect plug you may have 4 or 5 wires that have to be remove each on there own so make a drawing so they can be replaced in the proper way.with a 12v tester on the back side of the switch one terminal should read b for battery one should read I for ignition with a tester check b battery should be all ways live turn the key to on and see if I ignition terminal lights up and then there should be a s for start turn key and see if the s terminal is live if I oe s fail the switch is bad

Re: ignition switch question

If the only thing the key will not do is engage the starter you may want to look at the neutral saftey switch and related wiring.

Good luck!
