Ignition switch testing?

I've got a 98 Johnson 90hp. I turned it off while I was on the water and when I went to restart it, it did nothing. Battery is good. Kill switch is hooked up. I,ve got no instrument power but all accessories are fine. Is it the ignition switch? I've pulled the switch out and have no power to any of the wires. How do I test it? Am I looking in the right place?

Re: Ignition switch testing?

First check the 20A fuse under the cowl...follow the red wire from the solenoid.

keyswitch:
should have 12V on the red (might be red/purple) wire terminal "B" to engine ground (black wire terminal "M").

Should have continuity between "B" and "S" (yellow/red) with key turned to "start", also with key pushed in and turned to start.

Should have continuity between "B" and "A" (purple) when key is turned to "On"

Should have continuity between "B" and "C" (purple/white) when key is pushed in.

Should have continuity between "M" (black) and other "M" (black/yellow) when key is "off".

if you have no power to the ignition switch I agree trace back to find the power loss one of those wires should be hot all the time

OK I checked the fuse under the cowling and it was blown. I replaced it and it blew again. Where should I go from here? I assume it's a short, correct?

OK here we go another update.

keyswitch:
should have 12V on the red (might be red/purple) wire terminal "B" to engine ground (black wire terminal "M").

I've got nothing here but fuse is blown anyway. Is the black the same as black/white? I believe it is.

Should have continuity between "B" and "S" (yellow/red) with key turned to "start", also with key pushed in and turned to start.

I've got cont. here all the time no matter what position of the switch.

Should have continuity between "B" and "A" (purple) when key is turned to "On"

Should have continuity between "B" and "C" (purple/white) when key is pushed in.

This is works.

Re: Ignition switch testing?

12v from the battery comes through the fuse to keyswitch terminal "B". Turning the key to "start" is supposed to connect battery power from "B" to the starter solenoid on "S".

Your test results show that the fuse is blowing because the switch is faulty and needs to be replaced.
