ignition switch wirirng for 85 1.6L omc sea=drive

Can anyone help? Had wiring pulled off ignition switch to test, kids untangled it for me!!!! I have a schematic, but its for a 1984, and after working on it for 3 hours, I have tunnel vision! Also, the motor wouldn't shut off (hence wiring check)...I turn switch off, motor would drop in revs but keep running fine. What could this be? My first project boat!

Welcome!!<br /><br />If the motor drops rpm when you turn off the switch it may be grounding out only one power pack. The black wire with the yellow tracer is the kill wire. Check that wire in the connectors on both packs on the motor. I'll bet one is out, not making good contact or is broken from the pack to the red commector plug.

thanks Dhadley! This is a nightmare!!! (Well, I guess a hobby). Bought a hull, 20' thermoglass with a sea-drive! Hasn't seen water yet, hope it will some day! hp

I re-wired the ignition and all the guages, so everything works...trim tabs/tilt-trim, etc. Haven't been able to check black\yellow wire for ground to power-pack yet...but I read from NOVOCANE(?) that you can replace the power packs with gm ignition modules. Does he or anyone know what year of module? (in case power-packs need replacing) Thanks!!!

You were right, Dhadley!!!! Stbd power pack yellow/black wire to junction plug TOTALLY corroded. Replaced it! Thanx!!!!!

OMC manuals are still available for these motors. I got the shop and parts manual for my 1987 Sea Drives here:<br /><br /> http://www.theoutboardwizard.bizhosting.com/parts_service_and_owners_manuals.html <br /><br />I have had mine for 10 years and the Sea Drives have been trouble free. I wouldn't mess with one without the manual as they are quite complex and the manual is very comprehensive. Just hope I never have to really read that part.

I have a johnson/evinrude manual that seems to be the same as the omc, and it includes sea-drives...so far, so good!
