Ignition switch

I have a 1971 Chrysler 55HP. Battery ignition. Not magna. the old ignition has 6 terminals.
B has red wire hooked (battery circuit)
C has green wire (choke)
S has yellow wire (starting)
I has blue wire (to coils) When you turn key to start coil gets power
M has white wire (tach wire)
M has nothing
My diagram shows the above, so should my other M (empty one) have a white wire going to tach? I have mine set up as above except nothing going to either M terminals. I have white wire going directly to tach.
I ask because I need another switch and am going to get one with a longer shaft. So I can mount it. I have seem other ignition switch's with the , B, C, S, I terminal only. Can I use them since I do not use the M terminals on my switch? But my diagram for my motor does show the switch with the 2 M terminals. Seems to me they are only really being used on the 55's with magna ignitions.
Thanks

Re: Ignition switch

The two "M" terminals are not used on your engine. They do not connect to anything except each other at stop position.

The white wire was probably connected to one "M" terminal for convenience, that is, to terminate it somewhere and not have it swinging free under the dash. I have on occasion used the "M" terminal when the white wire was not long enough to reach the tach. I then ran another signal wire to the tach connected to the same terminal. Simply an easy way to lengthen the white wire without cutting off the factory terminal and crimping on another length.

Therefore, you can buy and use a switch without these terminals.

I have been working on the interior of this boat lately. Am doing some wiring now. This is what I wanted to know. I thought so, but needed your confirmation first. LOL. Can you take a look at my temp gage thread.
