ignition system trouble? 115 hp

I have a 1996 Johnson 115. I have brand new plugs and fuel filter in it, the motor will start but something is rattling really bad. Just got back from the river, it idled for a minute but was really hesitant like a fuel filter was bad. When I gave it some gas to get on pad it died. Then it wouldn't even idle. I am puzzled. Called the repair shop and they said it would be end of May before they could touch it. Any advice?

check compression,
check gear lube for ground up metal or water.
has it been sitting ? any rattles last time you ran it ?
