ignition timing procedure needed for 1983 175hp seahorse

hey guys, finally got my motor idling right but i want to make sure i have the ignition timing dialed in right. if someone has the procedure i would appreciate it. also is there suppose to be a gap at all between the carb throttle roller and the ignition plate that contacts it? or are they suppose to be barely touching?
