I have a 1995 Merc 4.3L with Thunderbolt IV and was wondering how often I should give it it an ignition tune up. This is my first season as the owner and I am not sure when it was done in the past. I feel that the boat could start a little easier and run a little smoother.I saw that they sell kits at West Marine so I am planning on doing this this winter. Also, wondering about the carb and a rebuild. How often should this be done and is it worth it to buy a carb rebuild kit. I am no super mechanic, however, if fairly detailed in a kit I may give it a shot this winter. Any input on kits and level of difficulty please pass on. Thanx

Re: Ignition Tune Up / Carb Rebuild Kits

A complete tuneup in the spring while getting the boat ready for the season is what I recommend. It also assures best fuel economy.
Carbs shouldn't need a rebuild inless there is a problem with them.

Don

Is it a good idea just to buy one of the ignition tune up kits that I have seen at places such as West Marine? I was thinking of that along with new wires and plugs.

Re: Ignition Tune Up / Carb Rebuild Kits

Don

As for the carb, I don't think it is running that great. I believe my boat has spent a little time in the ocean (the odd day trip near Belligham)and there seems to be a little corrosion on the outside of the carb and pull out etc. I figured that I would remove it and try and clean it up a bit so I thought maybe I should try and overhaul/rebuild it. Any thoughts on the best kit to do this with.

Thanx
