The purple wire should go to the rectifier on your motor. If you are reading 15V when it is running that is good. It means the charging system is working. That wire does not go to the ignition key switch. The wire would be connected to a meter on your console like a battery meter in your car.

Re: IGNITION WIRING CRYSLER 75

My manual says white to the M leg on switch. One of the M legs should be empty. Black is a ground. The reason the black goes in the harness it to get a ground to the console. My guess is that the rectifier is already hooked up to the battery somehow. You can test this by hooking a Volt meter on DC across the battery. Start motor and voltage should increase. I am pretty sure that purple wire is there for a meter.

What problems are you having with the motor?

Hi EUROLARVA
Thanx for that ,the engine seems to be running fine ,i just would like to make sure it is charging.I have disconected the purple wire from switch as well as the black, this means i now have nothing on both the M posts,as it is the engine starts fine and swittches off fine, when i put a Multi meter across my battery the volts go up ever so slow.one thing the motor does do every now and thenl, when i crank it to start it will back fire, then crank again and it will start.
Thanx again

That year of chrysler can have one of three types of ignition systems on it. My manual says a white wire goes to one of the M terminals on the switch but can go to the rectifier or the cd unit or the distributer. My guess is it is a kill switch for the motor. Another system shows the key switch has only one M and it is not connected to anything and the white wire is connected to the I position on the switch.

The back fire you are getting could be a lean or rich condition in one of your cylinders. Have you ever decarbed this motor before? You might want to give that a try and see if it fixes anything. If not I would get a manual and do the carb sync and adjustments. You may just need to fine tune the carbs.

Might have better luck posting this in the mercury mariner forum. I have read similar posts over there concerning this problem. I believe it was a defective coil that dont work well at low temps. After motor warms up the stator (pretty sure it was stator) starts working. Good luck
