ignition works with battery off ?

I have recently installed a new starter in my 90hp envinrude. Now, when I turn the key it starts even if I have not turned on the battery ( switch with 1, 2 and both). The accessories still need the switch on though. What's up ? Any ideas.

Bearded Lady.....sounds like the motor cable is connected to the wrong post in the Battery Selector switch. Might give it a look.

The engine does not need the battery to keep running. The key switch is used to energize the starter, and to ground the ignition to kill the engine. You don't need either to keep the engine running.
