Ayuh,......

I Just did, on another forum.....

It should be within Inches of the Distributer....

Re: ignition

Found it thanks, both times. Is there a way to test it to see if its bad? Or more specifically if the ballast resistor inside is bad?

Re: ignition

Pretty sure you've already read it...engine cuts off after 30 seconds unless I hold key all the way to the right like starting...and yes starter was spinning while I do this.

Re: ignition

You need to find out why there is no voltage to the electric fuel pump, is that what you are working on?

Re: ignition

Yeah Maclin, I played with a light test today and got these results.

Purple/yellow wire feeding fuel pump: light stayed on while starting then went off
Purple wire feeding oil pressure switch: has power with key turned on

So fuel pump is has no voltage going to it after engine starts. But why?

Re: ignition

I have to say that I never expected you to test by keeping the ignition switch in the START position and letting the starter spin and have the bendig gear clank around on the flywheel like that.

One wire on the oil pressure switch will have 12 volts with the key on (and engine not running). The other wire on the oil pressure switch that goes to the fuel pump will not have 12 volts. The oil pressure switch has to sense oil pressure before it will turn on and let power thru.

You say you have 12 volts at the oil pressure switch feed wire, so if you jumper the wires together at the oil pressure switch then you should have 12 volts at the fuel pump with the key on (engine not running). If you do have the 12 volts at the fuel pump this way then it should start and run. If you do not have 12 volts at the fuel pump this way and there is still 12 volts at the oil pressure switch then you have a broken or shorted wire somewhere between the oil pressure switch and the fuel pump.

If the jumpered oil pressure switch method worked then DO NOT RUN IT THIS WAY PAST TESTING. INSTALL A NEW OIL PRESSURE SWITCH AND UNDO ANY JUMPERED CONNECTIONS BEFORE HITTING THE WATER.

Re: ignition

Why does everyone think that...The engine starts and forces the gear down...nothings touching the flywheel. But besides that point. Jumpering the two wires one pur/yel and one purple at at the oil pressure switch gets me same results.
However I just got a long piece of wire and Jumpered the purple wire at the oil pressure switch to the pur/yel wire feeding the fuel pump (close to the fuel pump) and the light stayed on (the fuel pump got power while the engine was running without me holding the key to start) So what do I replace?

Re: ignition

I apologize for any offense that may have been taken from my editorializing. I just felt that enough direction on other non-starter-y things to try was given. I feel your judgement of what to try first instead of those other steps could cost you more in the long run (or out on the water). The other methods did not involve any potential for mechanical abuse.

Now you need to help me, because my post#8 told you the pieces to find and fix based on results of the testing.....

From this latest description of what you did it seems to me you basically extended the feed wire at the oil pressure switch that had power all the way to the fuel pump and evidently that got power to the fuel pump. Does that accurately dsescribe what you just did?

If so, then did the engine start snd stay running that way?

You also stated you got no power to the fuel pump with the oil switch connections jumpered together. To me this shows bad wiring from the oil pressure switch to the fuel pump.

So then you still have two possibilities for fixing. The 1.) Oil pressure switch OR the 2.) Wiring from the oil pressure switch to the fuel pump.

First you need to find the wiring problem between the oil pressure switch and the fuel pump. Once you are certain that is fixed and it still does not get power at the fuel pump with the oil pressure switch hooked up then jumper the wires again, if that fixes the problem then you need to replace the oil pressure switch.
