I'll take the broken leg and count my blessings

Yesterday I watched my son pitch over the side of a bridge on his bicycle and land ten feet below on the rocks. There were no sides and he turned his head to look behind him.

I dreaded what I would see, but he was alert, with only a deep gash on his leg and chip out of his tibia.

Naturally we were alone on an isolated part of the C&O Canal towpath so getting back was problematic.

And by the way, his bike helmet was cracked--including the foam part.

I still think of what might have been.

Re: I'll take the broken leg and count my blessings

Years ago I made my son wear a helmet. It too paid off. He was riding on the street and went over a storm drain with large slots in it. His front wheel dropped down in one of the slots throwing him over the handle bars. Yep, it busted his helmet and he broke his collar bone.

Arms, legs, and other bones can be mended, but damage to the head can cause life long problems.

My son always complained that the helmet made him look dorky. I told him dorky people live longer because they wore their helmet.

Hope your son makes a fast speedy recovery,,,,,,:D

A friend of mine in NC lost his son to an eerily similar accident. They were riding bikes - Father, Mother, Son (and perhaps another child). They were crossing a 10ft high bridge over a small stream and the boy went over the side with his bike. I think the boy was 7 or 8 at the time. Somehow the end of the handlebar went into his head I believe. Very freak accident. No helmet.
