Hi all,
I am a newby to owning a boat and I am trying to make a somewhat educated decision. I am looking to buy a Key Largo 190cc from 2 different places. the first one is powered by a yamaha 115 and I believe it is fuel injected, the second comes with a mercury saltwater 150 V6 and I believe this one is carburator. the latter of the two seems to be a better deal and is a thousand less in price and a few more goodies.

Fuel injection vs. carbs, should there be a concern?

Thanks , Mike

I like the simplicity of carbs anyway, but its your choice. I think the fuel injection will be more fool proof, but I also like the extra HP of the Merc. I'll bet the 115 will be stingier on gas also. If you'll be strictly fishin by yourself, get the 115. You won't need the extra power. However, if you are gonna take a few people along, pull a skier, whatever; get the Merc.

Im sure there will always be more than me on board and always fishing gear and sometimes dive gear. so we will probably have 3 to 4 people on board most of the time.

Key Largo 190cc
Specifications on the boat is here:

http://www.keylargofishingboats.com/klproduct.cfm?Model=190

Considering the boat size, max approved persons onboard a 115 hp should easily let you accelerate up to plane and comfortably cruise at reasonably RPM (around 4000 RPM). Only reason really I would select a larger outboard on a boat this seize would be if You are going to have many persons and or much cargo onboard often. But if You are up to say 5 persons a 115 hp outboard on this boat will for sure be enough.

Is it a Yamaha F115 4-stroke (EFI, Electronic Fuel Injection)? Year?
If so, that outboard is very reliable and in general very good.

Newer Mercury SaltWater 150 2-stroke is also available with EFI (no carburators then).

Personally I would probably select the one with Yamaha F115 4-stroke (if it is that they are offering). Because of 4-stroke, EFI (easy starting), no smoke, no smell - if the load (persons, cargo) is not going to be rather much.

Carburators usually works fine, but the trend on outboards is towards EFI (compare - all cars now use EFI).

If price is not the deciding factor I would probably select the boat with the Yamaha F115 4-stroke, if boats are about the same (quality and equipement).

get the 150 if you do a search you will find 100s of posts from people looking for more power and speed but i'll be willing to bet no one has asked how to make less power or go slower carbs have been around forever and there reliable with proper maintenance

I would stick with the merc.more reliable, and less costly to repair. If $ is an issue.

anyone know what the fuel consumpyion on the merc 150 would be pushing a 2000lb boat? I know the 115 would get around 5-6 gallons per hour.

cdivrmike,
Yamaha 115 hp 2-stroke:

They make no 115 hp 2-stroke EFI.
Their 115 hp 2-stroke has carburators and is Oil injected, with CDI Ignition system.

EFI, Electronic Fuel Injection, mean that the fuel is injected into the cylinders by fuel injectors, so no carburators are in use then.

Yamaha has 2-strokes EFI outboards, but it is larger outboards, for example the 150 HPDI (and larger) and 150 HPDI V-max (and larger). Yamaha name for this is High Pressure Direct (fuel)Injection (HPDI).

As it seems You are trying to decide between two outboards that are 2-strokes, I would then think You can as well select the Mercury 150 hp alternative since it is cheaper for You. And You get the benefit of having plenty of horsepower so You can cruise at lower RPM and still maintain good cruise speed (and low sound level).

Good luck!

Re: Im a newby

Thanks for all the info. I had no clue and just assumed the 115 was EFI.
