Hello everyone, long time no see. Been away from the site for a while but I'm back and I've got a "new" boat. We had some issues with the motor on the Starcraft last season and weren't able to get it running right. That coupled with the fact that it really gets beat around by the wakes on the lake we frequent prompted my wife to give me permission to upgrade. So in typical 2-foot-itis fashion, I got a 20'. It's a 2002 20' Hydra-Sports dual console with a 200HP Yamaha HPDI motor. I chose this boat because it has a 200 when most equivalent boats have a 150. It's a saltwater model which is tough to find in my area so I had to drive a good bit down to eastern shore MD. It's also rare to find one that wasn't bottom painted which is perfect for us since it won't sit in our slip for more than a couple days at a time and I definitely don't want to remove or maintain bottom paint. The motor has very low hours, under 300. That's the good. The bad is that although this boat wasn't abused, it wasn't exactly pampered either. So I have pretty big list of small fixes to complete before we take it up to our seasonal campsite the beginning of May. We only had it out a couple times before winter but it ran well, hauled a%$ and handled the chop very well. We're all very pleased with it.

The crazy part is that I still have the Starcraft and that's with spousal permission and practically encouragement. The final picture is of both boats docked. I'm still going to throw a few more parts at the 'ol Evinrude to try to get it running right. It's momentarily dropping a cylinder at speed. I've tried swapping 2 new coils around and swapping in a "known good" powerpack to no avail. I'm going to buy two more coils and one or two powerpacks and give it some more tries. The reality is that it will mainly be used for fishing now and it's perfectly fine for that even it's current state. We'll see how it goes owning two boats. The Starcraft is better set up for bass fishing with the front and rear fishing seats and bow mount trolling motor although there's a livewell in the HydraSports. If it becomes a burden to own both, I'll sell the Starcraft.

I have a thread up in the Yamaha section if anyone has any input on the maintenance of an HPDI.

Look like a good choice on the new boat, congrats! And speaking of good choices, I'd say the one you made some time back that led to you and "the missus" getting together was an even better one :)

She sure is clean looking.

At least it is an outboard. ;)

Good to see you back EZ. Glad to see you still have the Tin too.

I'm sure the guys could guide you to finding the issue in the johnnyrude forum.

Well rumors of my return may have been greatly exaggerated :p Back again now for a bit. We'll see how it goes. Honestly, I left back when the site got "upgraded" and things weren't working well along with a lot of new rules from iboats that I didn't really agree with. Internet usage crackdown at work kept me off during the day and the site's lack of functionality on mobile kept me off in the evenings. Going to try things again. Got a new job that doesn't seem to micro-manage as much so that should give me a little more web surfing time.

Boat update: The Hydra-Sports has been a HUGE success! Everyone in the family loves it. I spent some money on it at the beginning of the season with a mechanic to catch the motor up on all the preventative maintenance the PO likely neglected and it ran fantastically for us all season. We got up to our seasonal lake campsite darn near every weekend which was fantastic so the boat got a lot of use. It rides really well even on high traffic lake days. I was concerned that the big 200HP motor would be a real gas hog but it hasn't been anywhere near as bad as I feared. I guess the fuel injection improves the efficiency a good bit. I spray painted the stained vinyl with that vinyl spray paint the beginning of the season and it held up real well. I also replaced the live well pump, fuel filter set up, and interior lighting. My depth/fish finder is a POS and I have a new one to install yet. I also have an issue with the electrical system I need to figure out. Running anything with a higher amp draw like the livewell pump or especially the raw water washdown pump causes the entire system to cut in and out. Has no effect on the motor's electrics but everything in the boat cuts out. Can't figure that one out. But overall, SUPER pleased with it as is the family.

We did not personally use the Starcraft at all this year. However my buddy and fellow seasonal camper who's been fixing up a boat of his own for a while used it quite a few times with his family. It's running pretty badly at this point. The cylinder that cuts in and out has gotten worse and I think sometimes even more than 1 cuts out. Something is definitely wrong with the ignition system somewhere. That boat is coming home from camp this weekend and will not be returning. I'm going to keep it at my house to use locally. I'm going to attempt to get the motor running better by possibly throwing some parts at it. Or I'm hoping to maybe find a deal on a 120-140 looper. Possibly find a boat that has my desired engine that I can swap with the 90 and resell without being out too much. My wife doesn't really approve of that plan though.

That new boat is nice looking for sure!

I've never seen a docking system like that one you have pictured, what is that? A system like that may just solve the issue I'm having now. I upgraded from a 15" to a 21" late this year and now my dock is too small!

The dock is on a narrow section of the lake with very little current so finger piers are not needed and would reduce the docking space by half probably. They just installed little pads where the nose of your boat goes along with cleats on either side. If you run ropes from the back, the boats stay put pretty well.

Both boats are very nice looking boats. The "new" one is really nice. If you can afford it I would keep both and get the littler one running good. Like you said find one with a good engine and swap. Or just find a good used engine. Good luck to you with that and hope you find more time to spend on the forum

Those pads look like they are specifically molded for a V-hull to bump up against. Any idea where they came from?

Unfortunately not. I just did a little searching and couldn't find anything similar.
