Hi all,

Well, I admit it's a small step...but today...after 27 years of non-use and total neglect...the 1977 Merc 850 that was recently given to me came back to life!

I re-wired the internal wiring harness (it was toast) and I replaced the fuel lines.

Today I went for it...hooked up the battery and connected the fuel line. At first, the top carb dribbled a bit...but then it seemed to stop.

I turned the key...and after just three or four whines of the starter...she came to life!

It even pumped water! With the original impeller!

I had previously taken a cold compression test and got numbers from 166-170 on all four, so now that I know that it will actually fire up...I can feel better about investing in more maintenance...rebuilding the carbs and fuel pump, replacing the impeller and related O-rings...

So thanks to so many people here who have answered my posts and communicated via e-mail. I'm sure that my questions are just starting!

Here's a movie of the engine starting if you want to share in my joy!

http://www.russcamera.com/ebimages/DSCN0046.MOV

Mind you...it's a 7MB file....

Thanks again....Chuck
