With the extreme mild winter here in W. Pa. [80+ last couple days] my mind draws closer to getting the boat out of storage. But must be mindful Mother Nature's not done yet. But my mind has wandered to eBay & craigslist to look for items I need, ie. new captains seats and other goodies. I ran across a fellow selling a motor and Volvo lower unit on craigslist locally. I looked at it and decided to take a chance. It's a Ford 302 from a Glastron, and a, he says, 280 lower. The motor is striped of manifolds, distributor and most of the front stuff. Does have 2 pc. bell that needs new bearings, exhaust to the lower and holly 4 barrel carb. It turns over with breaker bar. The lower was damaged, prop and prop shaft bent, upper gear box and ujoints missing. But everything else intact. I have a AQ131c, 280 out drive. This looks like a 280 and i paid $125 for both. Figured i could part it out for more. Would like to try to rebuild the 302 and put in mine. Was it matched to the 280? I see that parts are readily available and i would enjoy the rebuild. Whatyathink?

Re: I'm excited!!!

Hello,

I have a 1978 Glastron with a Volvo AQ 190 which is a Ford 302 and it is connected to a Volvo/Penta 280 outdrive. My last boat was a 1977 Bayliner with a Volvo 130D 280, same drive. The connection may be different between the Volvo motor and the Ford motor but same drive on the outside.

Re: I'm excited!!!

The outdrive matched to the 302 uses a different gear ratio than the one matched to the aq 131.

If you want to repower, I would look for a boat with a full drivetrain with all the parts still intact. The parts that are missing, are the parts you need for a marine engine. You will apend a lot of money trying to buy all those parts.

Parts readily available...I'm not sure...

Not trying to be a downer, just don't want you to get going on something without the clear facts.

I have the 280 that goes with the 302. Just switch out the lower gear box? What would happen if I stayed with the current ratio? Have already located most of needed parts.

Re: I'm excited!!!

This one?

The lower was damaged, prop and prop shaft bent, upper gear box and ujoints missing.

Are you using this on your trophy?

to change the lower you would also need to reshim. You also use the bearing race from the original outdrive...

I've never tried switching lowers.

Using the 131/4 cyl gear ratio might work on a big boat...again, I've never tried that either.

Sorry, not much help.

On the Trophy, yes. I'm hoping that the damage is to the prop and shaft, and that the gears are ok. Was planning on keeping the 280 for spare parts. If I don't switch out the motor I'll part it out, bell housing, heads, exhaust yoke, etc. Should be able to get my 125 back.
