When i had finished prepping my boat to be painted(old 73 de hallivand 4.33m). I thought to myself.. How am i going to get it onto my driveway firstly off the trailer and then how am i going to flip it upside down without damaging it. Well after alot of thinking i thought Hey i can use hold tyres stacked on eachother and it will be like a rigid and very gripped pillow for the boat. So i got 14 tyres stacked them under the trailer.. below the transom etc.. and got in the car while my dad was letting off the boat slowly while my friend was placing tyres underneath. Wouldn't you konw it the tyres supported the weight of the boat without a hitch and didn't even crumple that much..

Things only got better. I now could paint my trailer because the boat was off it. I now could paint the bottom of my boat properly. I know could do anything i wanted to. The boat was even easier flipping it over with 4 people. It was a rainy day and unfortunately the boat slipped out of my dads and friends hands but because the tyres were underneath they absorbed the impact.

Trust me tyres are the only way to go!! (if your boat is small enough) And you can get used ones for free at the wreckers! And hey its much easier than wasting time to build wooden supports..

The only draw back is you get some marks on the boat from the tyres but this is easely solved with placing dropsheets where the boat is going to make contact.

Have fun!

y2j,

Ouch!

I'm fortunate, both my sons are athletes. I just invite their teams over with a "little" project in mind. ;)

Buy a couple pizza's and I'm good to go. :D

Ok... Here goes nuttin'...

21' c/c, 8'beam...about 1200 lbs. This all had to be done in an area that is just big enough to park the boat... Area's about 15' wide X 40' long...

To turn it over and set it on it's top so I could paint the bottom, I took an engine hoist and chained it down to some large eye bolts in my driveway with the hoist's legs extended all the way out... I then ran a chain through the two exhaust ports (it's an inboard) on the transom and hooked that to the engine hoist to lift the transom... So far so good...

Heres where things get interseting and a bit precarious...

I took an old trailer axle and stood it up on end and slid it into the trailers winch stand, the axle is now standing straight up... I ran a chain from the top of the axle to the front of the trailer near the tongue to triangulate the whole mess... Then I took my trusty come-along, hooked the buisness end to the top of the axle and the other end to the bow U-bolt, then cranked it up pretty high... Problem was I could not crank it up high enough for the desired "Rotisserie effect"... Can you see where this is going?...

Then I hitched the trailer to the truck and pulled forward enough to raise the boat enough so it would spin over and clear the trailer.... Then with a little help from me and my Pop, just gave it a little push and the boat spun right over and did so with complete control... Not even wild and uncontrolable ... Very EZ..

Backed the truck up, lowered the bow and stern, set it right back down on the trailer, blocked it all up, job done...

Now flipping it back over did not go as well...

The only point on the transom that was close to the new center line to make it EZ to turn were the U-bolts on the transom... So I did all the same things as above and got it lifted up high enough..

Well it went back over but not EZ... It took some force to get it to the point where it would turn..

I'm standing there pushing the boat to get it over and by this time it's about half way over... My Pop is on the other side waiting to help once it goes over... I'm holding on and pushing then when it hit that point where weight and gravity took over... Man alive, it went really fast nearly taking me over with it and giving Pop's a little knot on his noggin... (He's a tuff ol' fart)

Now it's hanging there, swinging back and forth and I'm sweating bullets just waiting for something to give way and kill the whole deal...

I was lucky... Everything heald and I got her set back down.... And not one scratch in the fresh paint... Never Again...

Man.. Was that a long post, or what?...

Man oh man, I sure learn a lot from you guys on here (being new to boating). But I don't know if I'm brave enough for some of them ;) . But it is neat.
