So I'm getting along nicely with my boat restoration of what I believe to be a glastron cvx 16 (?) and it's come to the biggest problem, replacing the wood behind the dash, it's completely rotted out, and it needs to be replaced so the dash wont be so flimsy, however, I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the rotten wood. the wood isn't entirely rotten, just all along the bottom, on the starboard side (where all the support comes from) and around the gauge ports and such. The problem is that it's fiber glassed on, not over the wood, just between the wood and the fiber glass of the dash. does anybody know how to remove the wood to replace?

p.s. I'm going to have to replace the wood along the starboard side of the boat too, so is there a different process for this?

If you really want some help, I'd recommend posting some pics of the area, and at as many angles. I'm sure there's somewhere here that's encountered your problem, but seeing it is what it'll take to draw that person into the fray. There's a bunch of folks posting threads like this one every day, and usually, the pics draw the quickest attention. Good luck.

(on a side note, did you separate the cap from the hull?)

@emoney no, I'm just laying up under the dash with eye protection on, haha. and it's dark where I am, I will try to get some pictures of the mess tomorrow. but I was just wondering if there are any sorts of tricks to it? or any special tools needed. I'm going to try to do it without having to undo any of the other work I've done on the boat so far. thankyou for the quick response though!

If your boat is anything like the Glastream that I have sitting in my yard, I think that you best bet would be to just use a sheet of aluminum on the back side of the rotted wood then use some nice stainless steel bolts with button heads to sandwich everything together.

But pictures would be great. I would say that if the dash is rotten you really need to look at the floor and transom of that boat.

Woodonglass I just need to get some pictures taken, I know how to post them and everything but it's been raining non stop for 3 days while my poor boat has had no cover :/

Fed up, I've actually considered that, but the way it's rotted I don't see how that could work, I'll get some pictures up here as soon as I can but till I do the best I can do is try to describe it; the wood is fiberglassed to the back of the dash, and has all of the holes for gauges on the port side, this side is solid. but on the on the starboard side of the hole for the steering wheel it's EXTREMELY rotted and falling apart and dropping out from under the dash. I've done my best to remove most of the rot but there's not enough solid wood to support the dash and it's extremely flimsy.

and the floor and transom are extremely solid and sturdy, sealed off by fiberglass pretty well I guess, but I could jump up and down on it for days and be more worried about my trailer breaking :D

thankyou for trying to help, I'll try to put pictures up as soon as I can!
